“Too often we underestimate the power of a touch, a smile, a kind word, a listening ear, an honest compliment, or the smallest act of caring, all of which have the
potential to turn a life around.” - Leo Buscaglia

Welcome
to the

Mrs. Rosenthal
| I am Helma Rosenthal, the school counselor here at Fogelsville Elementary School. Leo Buscaglia has summed up so
beautifully what school counseling is all about, the art of communicating, connecting, and caring, as a way to create success for all of our students. As part of this school community I enjoy being one of many on the team who are joined in helping all children who come through our doors to grow and learn to their fullest potential. |
| Please feel free to click on the categories below to find out more about me and my role as the school counselor. |

| Counseling focuses on advocacy for all students as an avenue by which students can achieve their personal goals on
the way to becoming productive and responsible citizens. I am committed to working toward creating a nurturing environment at school that is emotionally safe and supportive for our students so that all students can achieve academically by accessing the educational opportunities at their disposal. My deepest belief is that in order to be an effective elementary
school we must provide a solid foundation for the development of future citizens who regard learning as a lifelong endeavor. If we are successful we will help to develop citizens of the world who are confident, productive, creative problem solvers, who appreciate diversity and embrace the notion of working to improve life for the generations who follow.
Isn’t that what becoming educated is all about? |
My undergraduate degree is in Elementary Education from Temple University. I earned a M.Ed. in elementary school counseling from Kutztown University and have my principal certification from Penn State University. I have
been the school counselor at Fogelsville since October of 1994. I was a school counselor with the Saucon Valley School District and the Carbon-Lehigh Intermediate Unit prior to coming to the Parkland School District. My earliest roots in education are as an elementary teacher with experiences in urban Philadelphia, PA
and rural Iowa.

I live with my wonderful husband, Rich, two dogs, Sadie and Gracie, an all white cat named Pepper, Mr. Fish, and George, the bird. Our two children, Sally and Christopher, both grown-up, come to visit with us. I know it’s unbelievable but I am also a grandmother by my husband’s two grown-up children and we currently have four grandchildren, all boys!
I love to read, garden, and travel, entertain, learn new things, play computer games, watch movies, go to the theater, listen to music and practice yoga. I am fortunate to have a close family and many wonderful friends.
| My life has been rich with experiences that I draw from for understanding and empathizing with others.
My philosophy in life is to treat everyone, especially children, with respect and kindness. |
| Emotions or feeling are often described as the weather; feeling sunny or perhaps grey as a rainy day, storm clouds are described as angry; a friendship that was once warm in now chilly. Keeping with this theme children identify with the symbolism inherent in the rainbow as one of hope and better
weather after the storms and heartaches of life. The Rainbow Room is a place where you can come to talk about your feelings and hopefully leave feeling as if a rainbow of hope has come out in your heart. |
| The counseling program is an integral component of the instructional program. I work to help our young student's effect change in the domains of academic, career, and personal/social development. I work to help students acquire knowledge, skills, a positive attitude, to improve
attendance, behavior, and increase academic achievement. I work within the existing curriculum to support student development. I provide responsive services and system support. I am a school leader who uses data to make decisions. I am a communicator who gathers and shares information. I am proactive. You will see me work in the
following ways: |

Individual Counseling |
Sometimes it helps to talk to someone.
I meet with students individually and confidentially to help them resolve or cope constructively with their problems and developmental concerns. Students may want to talk about friendship issues, home issues, or how to be successful in school. These meetings are scheduled to be least intrusive to the
instructional day. |

Small Group Counseling |
Sometimes it helps to talk to each other.
I meet with small groups of children who have similar concerns. When students hear others talk about their feelings or how others are coping with or handling problems, they get ideas that they can use for themselves. Group topics may include changing families, making friends, adjusting to a new school, study skills, stress/anxiety
management, anger/self-control management, loss and bereavement. |

Classroom Guidance |
We can all learn from each other.
Each year I work with teachers that have requested lessons on a variety of topics including making friends, learning about self,
relaxation, cooperation, emotions, problem solving and conflict resolution. I also facilitate classroom meetings that address current needs of the students in the classroom. |

Buddies |
“A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.”
I coordinate and supervise the Buddies program. Students from Parkland High School come to help some of our students here at school by providing them with valuable one-on-one attention. They act as a buddy to students who benefit from their support in order to develop confidence and
social skills. The High School students work in conjunction with their teacher, Mrs. Connie Harakal. |
Peer Mediation Program |
Kids can help kids.
I train selected students to act as Peer Mediators who help students in conflict find positive ways to solve disagreements. Peer Mediators use interpersonal, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills to help solve playground problems. |

Bulling Prevention |
So that every student is free to learn without worrying about being bullied at school.
I am part of the Bullying Prevention Coordination Committee that helps coordinate bullying awareness activities, provides support to the staff and school community, and is a liaison with the district Bullying Prevention Committee. |

Safety Matters! Program |
You can be smart in dangerous situations.
I work with the Crime Victim's Council to coordinate the Safety Matters! Program which helps children to identify unsafe situations they may encounter such as dealing with a bully, a stranger, physical abuse or attempted sexual abuse by someone the child knows. Children are taught that they have the right
to be safe and that there are Three Safety Rules that can help them to get safe when they feel unsafe. The safety rules are say NO, GO somewhere away from what is making them feel unsafe, and TELL an adult they trust. |

Consultation |
Parents and teachers need to talk, too.
I serve as a source of information for parents and teachers working collaboratively to best serve the needs of our children. Parents may consider me as a resource, someone to call when not sure what to do or are in need of assistance. Our conversations, like my work with the children, are confidential. |
Instructional Support Team |
When more heads are required to understand problems of learning and how a student learns best.
I am a member of the team identifying problems that may interfere with a students' learning and help to provide potential solutions. I frequently observe student behavior and participate in activities designed to provide the team with information related to the psychology of learning. |

Assessment/Data Collection |
How can you know what direction to go if you don’t know where you are?
I coordinate the state and district assessment programs at the building level. I help students identify their skills, abilities, interests and achievements by providing assessments for self understanding, as well as administering ability screening tests and providing
interpretation of standardized tests. |

Communicate |
Information is basic to understanding.
I communicate and exchange information with parents and guardians by way of conferences, articles on a variety of topics, and the Counselor's Corner column in the Fogelsville Flash. |
