At Fogelsville Elementary School the Learning Support Team includes four special education teachers, two special education paraprofessionals, and five teaching assistants for child-specific needs. This group of trained professionals communicates and collaborates daily with the regular education teachers to support our students in all academic areas. We strive to keep an open line of communication with parents, further strengthening the team philosophy between school and home.
We service identified students of all academic, physical, and emotional abilities. Upon entering the program, a team is developed, consisting of the parents, regular education teachers, therapists, Support Services Coordinator, and Special Education teachers. The team meets to discuss and develop an individual education plan (IEP) geared toward that student's special need(s).
Learning support students are integrated into the regular education classroom for as much of the academic day as possible, according to the individual education plan for each student. This helps to strengthen and build peer relationships, both inside and outside the learning support environment.
For some learning support students, Community-Based Instruction (CBI) is an integral piece of their education, bridging the gap between school and society. In addition to teaching the fundamentals of reading, writing and arithmetic, identified students are provided with the tools necessary to become functioning members of the community. Using a functional curriculum to coincide with community outings, students learn how to apply academic and social skills to their lives in the community.
All Parkland Special Education Programs and services are in compliance with State and Federal laws governing this area.
