My name is Debbie Searfoss, the reading specialist at Fogelsville Elementary. Fogelsville Elementary has a full-time reading specialist to support the development of reading for both students and staff. The reading program being utilized is Houghton Mifflin, A Legacy of Literacy.

Mrs. Searfoss

This program is the instructional tool used to establish a comprehensive reading program that includes teacher read aloud, shared reading, guided reading, and independent reading.  The reading and language arts curriculum also encompasses the writing process.  Together state standards, Parkland curriculum, and students’ needs drive the instructional path for students.

As the reading specialist, I support the school district’s reading program and classroom teachers with materials, professional development, and the development of student reading progress.  Along with the classroom teacher, I monitor student progress in reading.

I am also a part of the Instructional Support Team (IST) where I collaboratively assess and support various students’ needs.  In order to differentiate to meet students’ needs, Fogelsville Elementary participates in both the Title I Program and the District Remedial Program.  It is my responsibility to coordinate and implement these support systems.

The Title I program offers support to first and second graders in reading and math.  Title I assistants provide additional support in classroom instruction to meet students’ needs.  These assistants are trained by the reading specialist and communicate daily with the classroom teacher to best meet the needs of the students.

Support is offered within the classroom setting.  In reading, the intervention program focuses on the critical areas of effective reading…phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension.  In math, the program is designed to review strategies, skills, and problem solving techniques.

The District Remedial Program (DRP) supports kindergarten, third, fourth, and fifth grade students in the areas of reading and math.  DRP support is offered within the classroom setting. These instructional assistants work closely with the classroom teacher and the reading specialist to reinforce and supplement strategies and/or skills specific to students’ needs.

Together, through communicating, connecting, and caring we will provide children with the tools for academic success.
