Students
who demonstrate a need for specific instruction in communication skills
are identified through a process that begins with a referral for
screening. A referral may be made by a parent, teacher, or the
Instructional Support Team. The areas that are addressed are as
follows:

Alternative
methods to help nonverbal students communicate through alternative
methods
|
| An
informal screening consists of observing and a talking to students in the classroom. If further testing is warranted, a
letter asking permission to do a formal speech/language evaluation is
sent home. Parents are invited to meet to discuss the results of
the evaluation and to help plan any needed interventions.

| Students
receiving speech/language therapy, usually attend one thirty minute speech session per week.
