The Accelerated Reader establishes a clear system of goals and offers awards both of which serve to motivate students to read more books. Based on three simple steps it is fun and easy to use.

  1. Select a book – Students make their own choice from almost 8000 titles in the Springhouse Library.
§         All books included in the program are labeled with a red dot on the spine.
§         The electronic card catalog identifies all Accelerated Reader books and gives the point value.
§         The Accelerated Reader Program lists books by author, title, reading level, and point value.
  1. Read the book – Students read the book at their own pace.
  1. Take the test – Many students find the test to be one of the most enjoyable parts of the program.  They take a computerized test, featuring 5, 10, or 20 multiple-choice comprehension question.  The computer tells the student how many questions he or she answered correctly.  It shows the answers for the questions missed, and awards reading points based on the book’s value and number of correct answers.

The computer keeps track of each student’s reading record, and the points earned may accumulate from year to year.

Points can be used for:

§         Satisfying teacher reading requirements
§         Extra credit
§         Accelerated Reader Auction

Every year students earning 100 points or more have the option of attending an auction to “spend their points.”  Auction items include a color TV; cordless phone; CD players; VCR and DVD players; season pass to Dorney Park; movie passes; gift certificates from book stores, fast food restaurants, video/DVD rentals, the LV Mall; and more.

All Learning Support students have the opportunity to attend a “silent auction” and breakfast party.

By motivating students to read, the Accelerated Reader naturally stimulates a love of reading itself – a love that will enrich a student’s world for the rest of his or her life.
